Battle 9 RESULTS DAY

Welcome to RESULTS DAY for Battle of the Bands!!

I am dcrelief, and my battle featured the Bob Seger song: Turn the Page.

> Wow, Wow, WOW!! You people really threw the comments, like a gauntlet thrown before the battle. We have some really serious Seger fans - oh yeah. However, we also have some very serious Metallica fans. (I know you're all, whoot-whooting & stuff.) One more minute here, and the results are going to have your head spinning.

Remember, Bob Seger wrote and recorded it first. One of the hottest songs you'll ever hear. I entered him in this battle as a curiosity. This song has been covered by four different bands. I chose Metallica's version to challenge, in a polite way... (smile)

Including my vote, there were a total of 19 votes! I think that's a record for dcrelief!! Thank you for taking the time to listen, comment, and drop a vote in the box. [I did have one comment but have been unable to verify that a vote was cast with it. In all fairness, I made the effort to contact the commenter. At 8:30 A.M. I closed the battle, as is.]

My vote was cast for Metallica.
Now the good stuff... Who won? Who lost?

Metallica     12 votes (63.157%)

Bob Seger    7 votes (39.842%)

Thank you for your participation! Let's not forget...
A very special thank you to our event hosts:

NEXT BATTLE DATE: Friday, May 15th!!!

Leaving you with another turn for this battle's winner!

  1. Hi, Dixie! This is a double shocker! I never thought Metallica could defeat Bob Seger's original and by such a wide margin, and who knew that you are a metal monster like me? :) It just goes to show you can never be absolutely certain of how people will vote in a battle of the bands or in an election.

Thank you very much, dear friend Dixie, for staging an exciting BOTB. See you next time! (Ever think of entering The Dixie Chicks as one of the contenders? :)

The Dixie Chicks do Country, but OUR Dixie does Polka, so I don't think that would work.

    2. Hi Shady! This pretty much shocked me as well. I'm not sure that I'm a metal monster. I liked Iron Butterfly, Uriah Heep, Yes, Cream, The Who, Guess Who, Hendrix, Santana... I mean what do you call them? (Besides, great artists?)

I've had a Dixe Chicks battle lined up now, for about 6 months - not sure how it will fly? You know people's politics, ad nauseam.

Glad you enjoyed this battle. I'm heading your way to see which song bird owns the tree!!

    3. ~ D-FensDogG... remember, that's ixnay on the olkapay. (Why didn't I take pig Latin in school?) Only you know I played ac______d___n. Remember - it's a secret?!

    4. Oops! Sorry 'bout that, Dixie Polka.
Well, I'm sure no one has figured it out yet, and I promise never again to allude to the fact that you play the __cor_io_.

Dang it! I have a heard time wrapping my mind around that result. I mean, the song is all about road-weariness and the tired defeatism of long-haired musicians facing prejudicial scorn from "polite society". And almost all of that is lost in the high-energy, heavy metal hijinks of Metallica. By the sound of it, they could have been singing a song about fighting against "The Man" and winning!

Oh well, Metallica triumphed fair and square and once again...

    It just goes to show,
    with BOTB you never know.
(And that's part of the fun of it.)

Dixie, thanks for always including a nice word about FAE and I. And thanks also for being a participant with us. You have been putting together some REALLY GOOD Battles (regardless of whether or not I applaud the voting outcome). You're a total BOTB veteran now, so lemme axe ya: Having fun yet?

    1. ~D-FensDogG,
I relate to what you're saying, and I agree - road weariness. I never thought Metallica might be taking a different direction until I found the following link early this morning. If you go there, you'll find a brief interview with Bob Seger on the Metallica version. Lasts a few seconds.

Below that video is Metallica's official video with Turn the Page soundtrack. If I had seen this beforehand, there might not have been a battle. This video is a bit unnerving and risque. I would certainly never have posted it for regular battle view. In my research of the last six months, I have never known this video to exist. The video is centered around a female stage performer. She begins speaking as soon as you click, 'play'. [You'll have to copy and paste.]

That said, and revealed, it was a chance I took... don't we all still take chances sometimes? The exception is chili cheese, jalopena burritos - no surprises, and no anchovies, puh-lease!
You and Fae be good folk! In fact I loves all my BOTB Brats! We're the best, not the wurst. Ha! Whether you're applauding my efforts or doing like my Dad used to do... (used to shake his head and say, "Dixie, Dammit."), I'm here, soaking up the rays of the next tune. I know you know dis song, "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone." Well, get ready - May 15th is not THAT far away. Oh, I just getting warmed up! Yes-sir - Summertime and da living is easy...

    2. OK, I watched it, and I see how they gave the song a whole different meaning. But like all heavy metal bands, there's no such thing as nuance - it's all over-the-top and in-your-face.

Heavy metal is just such a very, very limited soundscape to work from. It's like Reggae except not nearly as pleasant (to my ears, anyway).

I liked the Metallica version even less after watching the video. But to each their own.

I liked your brat/wurst line. Pretty clever, Dixie Polka.

And by the way, I am a loyal Pepsodent user. That's ALWAYS my toothpaste of choice. I'm not particularly loyal to any specific brand of deoderant or dishwashing liquid, but I prefer Pepsodent toothpaste and Dial (gold) soap bars.

      Coca-Cola or Pepsi? Neither.

    3. I am strongly inclined to agree with your assessment. As I said, if I'd watch THAT first, there wouldn't have been a battle. That was a lot to stomach. Especially at the end, when the performer says she wouldn't change a thing.... totally opposes what the song was all about. I can't seem to find a statement from Metallica on the video shoot.

Okay. "Tom's natural toothpaste." "Nefertiti Oil and Bath Salts." "Dial Liquid cut with distilled water." Baking soda and vinegar for household cleaning. Ginger Ale cut with distilled water. No alcohol - empty calories for me. Ha!

  3. I love both versions of this song, although I must admit to having some bad feelings about Bob Seger's version. I remember singing "Turn the Page" at a party shortly after it first came out. A girl told me I was flat (which caused my testicles to shrink up and disappear into my body from embarrassment)! Decades later, I still remember that. I don't hold Mr. Seger personally responsible. But, would it kill him to send me a card?

    1. You should have given her a dose of her own medicine, Al, and told her that SHE is flat! :)

    2. Hi Al, and welcome to my battle page!! Sorry to hear about that test site with the ex girl friend. I hope you could still hit the high notes. (smile)

Meanwhile, a small token of my appreciation for your visit, You'll need to copy and paste; I'm no expert.

  6. I'm surprised by the outcome of this but maybe I'm just too tired to get into the more energized version. I like Metallica and though they performed this song well, their rendition just didn't move me like Seger's does.

  7. DIXIE BADASS,

Yeah, you just got another nickname based on that little yarn you told me in the comments section of my most recent blog bit. It's either that or DIXIE FIGHTER. Or maybe I should go with DIXIE CUP.

I think I need to think on this some more. StMc is much better with the nicknames than I am...

I'm sitting here shocked at this result.

I actually had this match-up on my list of battles (and I NEVER would have predicted this outcome). In fact, it's been there for a long time, and I hadn't used it because I thought Seger would shut out Metallica. Just goes to show how wrong I can be about these things.

    1. Yeah, Robin, I've had this battle shelved a while too. Then again I don't usually get the voter turnout like this month brought.

If you run out of names just whistle, "Dixie" and I'll be on da way.

Oh, the school bus yarn! Everybody was afraid of her. All of us little seventh graders and her in eight grade. I just got tired of watching the queen bee, day in, day out, threaten little Joe. Bam!

  8. I'm shocked, astounded, and totally surprised. It isn't often that a contender/cover group can beat out the original. Of course, I cast my vote for the original, (love me some Mr. Seeger) so it's only natural that I would feel that way.

when I first read your BATTLE, I was thinking it was pretty courageous to pit Bob against Metallica. Frankly, I would not have been surprised to see Seeger shut them out. Just goes to show what I know--absolutely nuttin.

I do want to express my appreciation for you always thanking and crediting me with originating BOTB. That means a lot to me and some days more than other. This happens to be one of those days, so it goes an extra long way. T

    Excellent battle here!

    1. Hiya Fae! I do appreciate you starting this gig! It's a trip going from battle to battle, wondering - what the heck possessed this person to post these songs? Ha!

I figure you could run this same battle in three moths and the results would be different. Depends on the day's demographics.

      Thank you very much, (smile).
