When Poetry Rocks ~ The March 15th Battle of The Bands (Battle 6)

WELCOME TO BATTLE OF THE BANDS!!
The blogging event first introduced by our friends:
If you would like to listen, and vote in other battles, please see the participant list in the right margin. If you would like to join this blog-hop contact Stephen T. McCarthy; leave him a message, and your blog address. We would love to have you participate! (smile).

A young girl sits among four trees, waiting on the angels to appear. In her backyard sanctuary she writes lines of love and happiness, and lately lines of sadness. Her babysitter committed suicide; she doesn't have answers. Those three angels visit her for many months. One watches - smiling. The second - looks straight ahead. The third angel is writing in a book. She sees them , wonders if they know, that she sees them?

From that time so long ago, until now, I've always loved penning poems. At that age I didn't know it was called poetry. Until recently I didn't know the work, of Robert Zimmerman, (aka, Bob Dylan), was poetry either. To me he was a folk/rock musician with a scruffy voice, and provocative lyrics. My apologies, Mr. Zimmerman, (smile).

Today's song:  "Make You Feel My Love" ~ Bob Dylan - Lyrics and Composition:

  • Dylan: "I consider myself a poet first and a musician second. I live like a poet and I'll die like a poet."
  • "Make You Feel My Love" is a song written by Bob Dylan that appeared on his 1997 album, Time Out of Mind.
  • In 2008, he became the first Rock musician ever awarded a Pulitzer Prize. He was given the special award for his "profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power."
There's an impressive list of artists who've brought this song attention. I wondered which two would embrace those lyrics? Which two would give us a look into the heart of Dylan? In his original recording, he played the piano, backed up with drums, and one guitar. Neither artist I chose actually plays an instrument on their recording. Yet their accompaniment is simple. I can only hope that Bob Dylan, and you the voters, will find these two artists quite expressive of his wonderful poem. Please vote for the one you like. Comments are welcome :)

Today's Battle Challengers ~ from the UK:  Adele versus Bryan Ferry (Yes, Bryan's up again!)

      "Make you Feel My Love"

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When evening shadows and the stars appear
And there's is no one to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you haven't made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
There's no doubt in my mind where you belong

I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling down the avenue
      There ain't nothing' that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on a rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothin' like me yet

Make you happy make your dreams come true
      There ain't nothin' that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love.

      1. Adele does a better job. Her voice has more passion.
And I'd say that Ferry is getting old, but crap, so am I...

          Alex for Adele! Thank you.

      2. Both versions come across fairly equally to my early morning ears. Adele sings the song very nicely, but Ferry sounds fine also. Ferry gives the tune a more appropriately plaintive sound.

Instrumentally there is a lot of parity between these, but the guitar solo on the Ferry version was more interesting with the mandolin-style strumming.

All things taken into consideration, my vote is cast for Bryan Ferry.

Lee, I thought that was very pretty, even though I do like steel guitar. It depends on the song.

I'll put you down for Bryan Ferry. Thank you!

      5. Both version are great and have a uniqueness. Adele's version brings to mind despair and Ferry's version sounds longing and missing. I love the mandolin style in there as well. All that being said I still go for Adele because my heart breaks when I heard her sing it. I felt it captured the song's lyrics for me more.

      6. ACK! this is a song that I had slated for a later BOTB ( well, with as many participants as we have today, that's bound to happen), but I would have put Adele against 'the man who ruined country Music (Garth Brooks). I really like Garth's version that was the headliner for the movie 'Hope Floats'. I also like that movie lots. so many great lines.

Anyway...I really didn't care for Mr. Ferry's vocal interpretation on this one (actually I don't care for him much). His band was good, but not enough to sway my vote.

Adele, on the other hand was great. I liked the simplicity of her backup (piano). It really showcased her marvelous voice.

give my vote to the lady in black. Adele.

        1. farawayeyes- Fae... oops!

So you know Garth AND Trisha Yearwood did the opening and closing soundtracks of the movie, Hope Floats... same song? At the last minute, I pulled Trisha, and put in Adele. Might have been a mistake - but - moving on now.

Ferry reminded me of Dylan's simplicity. However, I know we agree, it is a beautiful song! Thank you (smile).

Adele - the lady in black for you!

      7. Nice battle, Dixie! I enjoyed both covers quite a bit. I could sense the heart break in both artists...maybe Adele a tiny bit more than Ferry, but it's present in both covers. I had to listen to Dylan's cut because I couldn't put my finger on why I liked my picked and then it dawn on me. There are two components (maybe more, but I'm still trying to wake up mind ya).

First, the piano type. Adele uses an keyboard and Ferry a Grand. I love the tone of a real piano oppose to an electronic piano. Second, the vocal style. I like Adele for the most part, but it drives me insane to listen to a well known song such as this and to hear the artist muffle (for lack of better description) through some of the words...mostly the endings. Yeah, she does this even with her own songs, but it seems to appropriate. Ferry's voice is a bit weak. No doubt due to age, but its clear and he captures Dylan's style more closely than Adele.

I guess you know who I'm picking, right? Well, if it's not obvious I'll tell you. *grin* My vote goes to Ferry!

        1. My goodness, Cathy! You got it! I'm pleased you listened to Dylan's version too. I had thought to showcase it more, but didn't want to give a slant to either artist.

Ironically when I posted, I listened to both artist while reading through the lyrics. I discovered two lines had been switched, but only after I listened to Ferry's version. Adele's was too muffled to catch it.

Dylan composed this on piano; good catch, Cathy! Thank you.

Ferry gets a "grin" from Cathy! (smile)

      9. Wow. I think both did justice to the song, but I think it comes down to me just preferring the sound of Adele's voice - which surprises me, again, because I do like Bryan Ferry! Alas, my vote is for Adele.

      11. I read FAE's comment and laughed out loud for two reasons. I also had this one on my list of future BoTB (though not with this line-up, so I might still use it!). I can't believe she called Garth Brooks the man who ruined country music! I love Garth Brooks and, if not for him, I might never have DISCOVERED country music. The Garth Brooks CD Ropin' The Wind pulled me into the country music scene. Long story there, but I love me some Garth.

I preferred Adele on this one. That lady has some amazing pipes and this song really showcased them.

        1. Hi Robin. I hope you will use this song. I almost wish I'd pitted Dylan against Adele. Oh well, and too late.

According to my Dad, Garth ruined country. My Mom adored Garth. Eventually my Dad changed his mind. I stood in a huge line to get a cowboy hat signed by Garth, and then gave it to my Dad. I have got to get my old photos uploaded! He loved that hat.

Funny, but Garth's country drew me in too. Mom played, "Unanswered Prayer," and that was it. My husband, of that time, had been killed in an earthquake. I think I heard the chorus more than anything else... but it helped me to heal. That's what counts. (smile) Adele does this song nicely, I think. Her song dedication to Amy Winehouse is not shown in this video.

So, Adele for Robin!! Thank you for voting!

      12. We both are not very big fans of Adele. Nothing against her personally, just don't really care for her style of music. With that said, her pipes fit this song so much better than the subdued way that Bryan Ferry does his version.

Soul-crushingly enough, not only do we not get to vote for a fellow Brian with a Y, but we both have to vote for someone we really don't care for: two votes for the wickedly talented Adele Dazeem.

      16. More BOTBs than not wind up pretty one-sided. Nuttin' wrong with a blowout; it's just the shutouts we wanna avoid. (I have posted a number of BOTB installments that I was sure would be blowouts, just to see if I was right. As long as both recordings are good quality, that's all that matters to me.)

I hope to have Internet service in my home tomorrow night. If so, I will post my vote and my BOTB results late on the 21st.

        Yak later...

        1. Thanks or dropping by and leaving the message. I'll be changing up some things for the next battle. Since I'm last on the participant list, it might behoove me to choose a different time zone to post within. EST ain't working. My battle normally opens at midnight EST- some 4-8 hours before others open. Conversely, it closes some 4-8 hours before others close out.

This battle was a lousy choice on my part. I'll stop second-guessing my choices based on what I think others might prefer or not prefer. Yep - that has been important - not any more. This is battle. Where the heck are my fatigues??

        2. I don't know that posting time has as much to do with visits and votes as the number of blogs you visit and leave comments on so that they reciprocally visit you back. I get a lot of votes on mine because I do tend to visit a lot of blogs over the period that my post is up. Now wait and see what happens with my April 15th post when I'm not able to visit as many blogs during the active page life of that BOTB post. I would predict that my vote numbers will go down. April 1st might be higher since it's the first day of A to Z and traditionally that post gets a lot of hits. We'll see though.

And I thought your song choice and pairing were excellent. It's hard to say who will like what. I've found that out more than a few times, but what the heck--I post what I fancy or what seems appropriate for the day.

For what it's worth, when I was in my delirium of illness on Monday I woke-up from dreams with this song in my head and it stayed with me for quite a while that day. A welcome song to have playing in my brain when my body wasn't doing so good. So thank you for reminding me of a lovely song that I hadn't heard in quite a while.

        3. Lee,

          >>..."I get a lot of votes on mine because I do tend to visit a lot of blogs over the period that my post is up."

I've put myself in a tight spot. Every Friday I have a blog hop - 55 participants takes almost two days to get to everyone, due to when they get posted. Besides I read, and comment on at least another 50-60 blogs both days. I haven't been posting an invitation to this battle within my comments to these blogs. One Friday I did post a invitation on the blog hop itself and got three new voters for here. Last week I posted on my joke blog and picked up one from there. Still, the number of people hasn't upset me.

My problem is... I really don't have any clues on how to search for the songs. I rack my brain and come up with ones I love, but there must be a method to the madness. I hate drawing blanks. I was concerned about posting country music because some don't like it, but this past week I found out... everyone posts what they want - what I am I thinking? Like you said, >>..."I post what I fancy or what seems appropriate for the day." I certainly appreciate that! It means I'm on a right track in that area.

          >>..."A welcome song to have playing in my brain when my body wasn't doing so good." Okay, now you're gonna make me cry. No, I'm fine, but it's very nice of you to let me know. Dylan has a way with words. I have noticed I'm drawn to lyrics more times than not. Maybe that's why I keep running up on songs that turn out to be his?!

Well, you've given me some ideas that I can look into to make a better battle, and possibly better attendance. It's most gracious of you to stop by and leave me this message. It will work out. I know it takes a bit more experience and promotion on my part! I appreciate your advice, Lee. (smile).
