Background noise on today's featured artists:

WHEN IN ROME were an English new wave group, which originally consisted of vocalists Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann, and keyboards player Michael Floreale. They are best known for their 1988 single "The Promise".  A remixed version of "The Promise" was the first single from their self-titled debut album. It was an instant success, barely missing the Top Ten in the United States, peaking at No. 11.[4] Months later, the trio reached Billboard's pop chart's lower reaches for the last time with "Heaven Knows" (No. 95, 1990).[4] Additional singles did little on the charts, and the group ultimately faded away. Michael Floreale has re-established the group in Texas, under the same name. Farrington and Mann are a Uk based duo, no longer using the band's name.  More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_in_Rome_%28band%29

NEW FOUND GLORY is an American rock band from Coral Springs, Florida, formed in 1997. Emerging as part of the second wave of pop punk in the late 1990s,[7][8] music critics consider them a key pioneer of the genre.[9][10][11][12][13] Labelled the "godfathers of punk",[14][15][16] AllMusic credits them for "practically serving alongside the work of Blink-182 as the blueprint to the entire genre for the early 2000s."[17] Also renowned for their energetic live performances,[18][19][20] the band has garnered a cult following since their inception. During their lengthy recording career, the band have released eight studio albums, one live album, two EPs, and three cover albums.  The band currently consists of Jordan Pundik (vocals), Chad Gilbert (guitar), Ian Grushka (bass) and Cyrus Bolooki (drums).[3][4] Longtime guitarist and lyricist Steve Klein departed from the band, in late 2013, following "personal differences."[5][6] More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Found_Glory

  1. The first one has an 80's vibe and the second one a 2000's vibe.
Like the second best. More upbeat and with more personality.

    1. You're right, Alex, about the eras. Okay, so New Found Glory for you.

  2. No, no, no--that second version was far too frantic and edgy. I didn't get any sense of personality as much as the guys saying with their playing, "Let's get this damn thing over with!" I found this version rather annoying.

On the other hand, I like that syntho 80's sound of the first version. It's much smoother and easier on my ears and head. It's got a groove that's almost relaxing. The message is delivered in a much more convincing manner as well.

My vote goes to When in Rome.

    1. Lee - you crack me up! Oh my - certainly appreciate that upfront comment. Such a good laugh! I do understand - and that's a first vote for When in Rome. Thank you(smile)

  3. 2nd one is Crack on speed riding Speedy Gonzales:) No, no no-too nutsy for me. Frantic (I agree with Arlee). The first one has great voices especially in the refrain and has some more dream quality to it rather than just pounding music:) Even though the long haired gigolo has a hole in his crotch the first gets my vote

Okay - When in Rome - [holy crotch and all! (smile)]

  4. While I love punk (well, and even POP PUNK!), my vote goes to When In Rome for this one. Plus? It brings back lots of fond 80s memories :)

    1. Hey, hey, Kim - I understand those 80's memories! We'll put your punk in the trunk for today!(smile)

Okay - When in Rome for you.

    Easy, easy vote for me.

I played the first video. Then I went to the second one, and in less than one minute of listening to the second version, I knew how I was voting.

It was that 1980s Synth-Pop sound that, early in the '80s, forced me to begin exploring other musical genres - first Blues and then Jazz. 1980s Synth-Pop will send me running to the porcelain throne faster than a gallon of whiskey consumed in 30 minutes.

    I vote NEW FOUND GLORY.

But I liked the totally different arrangements in these two songs. Couldn't be more dissimilar.

I'm seriously glad there was a second choice that helped you save money. A gallon of whiskey ain't cheap. And we know how those 'promises' made to the porcelain bowl get kept.(smile). "Dissimilar " has produced some interesting comments so far.

One - New Found Glory - for the man!

    1. Thanks, Mike. It's one photo I flipped - surprised me how close it lined up.

Thank you, sir. Another for New Found Glory!

  7. I totally agree with Lee & Brigit, the first cover is easier on the ears. The over-all rendition is simply nicer. I am not a huge punk rock fan, so I'm sure this has a lot to do with the sway of my pick this morning. My vote goes hands down to When in Rome. Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Hey Cathy. We likes easy on the ears, tapping toes, snapping fingers, and swaying in the breeze stuff! (Your blog is so much fun.)

A vote for the smooth boyz, When In Rome, thank you!

  8. I admit, I love that 80s sound. Meanwhile, I couldn't even make it 45 seconds into the pop punk version. New Found Glory was huge when we were in high school. And yet I'm still here standing in perfect freeze frame, humming 'Don't You Forget About Me...'

You know what they say. When in Rome... vote for When In Rome.

  9. ABFTS has said this better than I could. "And yet I'm still standing in perfect freeze frame, humming "Don't You Forget About Me...." hahahaha. love that.

So, I've gone on more than once how much I love 80s music. I'm a child of the 80s. I will always love 80s music. That synth-pop sound is like coming home. It's mom and dad and homework and high school and all of the best things I choose to remember from being a teenager.

I don't hate the cover by New Found Glory. It's perfectly fine, but it's When In Rome for me.

  11. Easy vote for me: Guitar-driven punk edge almost always wins it over cheesy 80's synth-pop with mopey-boys singing. I couldn't make it all the way through the first version and listened to the second one twice.

New Found Glory for me by a landslide.

    1. Don't you hate it when promises sound insincere, Chris? (Mopey- boys singing... hahah)

      New Found Glory!

  12. I'm going to have to go with the second one. The first one's just WAY too eighties ;)

    1. Gezz - the eighties - when everyone seemed to promise something they couldn't keep.

Thanks, Michael - New Found Glory!!
